S is for Scarify – Word up!

Scarify
/ˈskarɪfʌɪ,ˈ/
To scarify means to rake over the ground to break up its surface. Preparation of a seedbed could be termed scarification. The second, more common meaning is the removal of dead grass, old clippings and moss from the surface of  a lawn with a rake to allow easier penetration of water to the soil below. Similarly nicking the seed coat of hard seeds to allow easier germination is also named scarification.
