N for Nonvascular – Word Up!

Nonvascular
\nn-vsky-lr\
Plants which have no vascular tissue, in other words without the xylem and phloem cells which conduct food and water around the plant. These are more primitive plants such as mosses, lichens, algae and fungi.

  1. Lichens, algae and fungi are NOT plants at all! Algae are from the protist kingdom, fungi are a kingdom of organisms more closely related to animals than to plants. Lichen are more complicated, they are a symbiosis between algae, cyanobacteria and fungi. Yes they are all non-vascular, but only mosses are (primitive) plants.

    1. Hey Lizzy, thanks for making that important distinction. This definitely adds to the diversity of the Glossary.
