John Innes composts are loam based for use with pot plants. John Innes is not a trade name but a horticultural institute set up in the early part of the twentieth century for the purposes of research. Originally in Merton, Surrey its headquarters are now at Norwich, Norfolk.
John Innes composts contain: loam, the main body of the compost including clay which absorbs and releases nutrients; sphagnum moss peat for porosity and aeration and gradually to decompose into humus; sand to condition the soil and improve drainage; fertiliser; nitrogen; phosphates; potash and trace elements.
