There are many many possibility’s of using recycled materials in your garden. It saves a lot of money and it gives your garden a more organic feel.
I am putting 10 idea’s here. If you have other suggestions then I would love to hear them.
10: Branches
Twigs, branches can make a fence, especially branches of a willow tree will be good to weave in a fence but any branch is fine. It is much better then a solid fence because it will allow some of the wind to pass trough instead of all the wind over it and on your plants.
We don’t have tree’s yet in our garden so we just went to the forrest nearby and collected fallen branches.
9: Tiles
roof tiles to make a raised bed or a footpath. I tried it myself and it worked like a charm, the red tiles look very nice in the garden. I found our roof tiles in the basement of our old house but I am sure you can get them for free on any second hand website.
8: Toilet rolls
Toilet rolls or rolled up news paper is excellent for growing seeds in, especially seeds with long roots like beans and peas.
7: Gutter
A piece of gutter is really good to grow seedlings in.
6: Pallets
Old pallets can be used to make a compost heap, we got our pallets for free after a search on a second hand website.
5: Wine Barrel
An old wine barrel as an rain barrel, we bought an old wine barrel for 30 euro’s. They also sold a wine barrel sawed in half which could function as a little pond.
4: Scaffolding Wood
A lot of second hand websites sell scaffolding wood which has been used. They are fantastic to make raised beds with. You usually pay 2 euro’s per meter for a used plank.
3: Soda Bottles
Make cloches from water or soda bottles. Cut out the bottom and place it over the seedling you have planted out. These little greenhouses will protect the seedling for any sudden cold nights.
2: Branch Arch
Use branches to make an arch for your beans to grow against
1: Containers
If you garden is small and you have to grow your veggies in containers then the possibility’s of using recycled materials are endless. Old buckets, boxes, can’s anything is possible as long as you don’t forget to drill some holes for drainage.
